How to improve skin tone as you age.

How to improve skin tone as you age.

Elastin is a protein in the skin that allows it to return to its original position when it is poked or pinched. As we age, our skin naturally loses elastin, which can lead to wrinkles and sagging skin. While you can't entirely replace lost elastin, there are steps you can take to protect the elastin you do have and to improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.

Sun Protection. One of the biggest factors that can damage elastin is exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays. Always protect your skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days.

Healthy Lifestyle. Smoking can damage the elastin in the skin, so if you smoke, quitting can help protect your skin's elasticity. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help protect your skin from damage.

Moisturise. Keeping your skin hydrated can make it look healthier and may minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

Topical Retinoids. Retinoids, derived from vitamin A, can stimulate the production of collagen and help improve the appearance of skin by reducing wrinkles and improving skin tone.

Peptides. Some skincare products contain peptides, which are small proteins that can stimulate collagen production.

Exfoliation. Regular exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new ones, leading to a fresher and more youthful appearance.

Professional Treatments. There are several professional treatments that can stimulate collagen and elastin production, including laser resurfacing, micro-needling, and ultrasound or radiofrequency treatments.

At Alc’emy we are firm believers in beautiful skin throughout all the seasons of our life. Aging is part of our journey. We treat our skin as we do the rest of the organs of our bodies, with care and science.
